Prep&Aftercare

Below you will find two sets of instructions: one for preparing the skin for permanent makeup and the other for post-procedure aftercare. Diligent adherence to all recommendations is essential to ensuring that your cosmetic tattoo yields satisfying results, as about 40% of the outcome depends on your own efforts. The skin is a living organism and requires special attention.

Preparation for Cosmetic Tattoo

General aspects related to all types of tattoo (read this first and follow to your specific type of tattoo):

1. Before the cosmetic tattoo procedure, do not take blood-thinning medications (aspirin, Panadol, ibuprofen, etc.), fish oil, seafood, fat food and also caffeinated drinks such as coffee, cola and others for at least 24h.

2. Give up alcohol at least for 48 hours before the appointment. It reduces protective functions of the body, immunity, which can lead to the formation of an inflammatory process. Also, alcohol consumption thins the blood, making a person more susceptible to heavy bleeding or bruising during the procedure.

3. Do not expose your skin to the UV light (sun or solarium). Having a sunburn is a direct contraindication to the cosmetic tattooing due to skin trauma.

4. It’s important to avoid getting a tattoo if you have open lesions or any other type of skin condition in the tattoo area. This includes cuts, scrapes, burns, rashes, cold sores or any other type of open wound and infections.

5. It’s important to separate procedures like Botox or Dysport from cosmetic tattooing by at least 2 weeks because both treatments can influence the skin and underlying muscles. Botox and Dysport temporarily paralyse muscles, which can affect the placement and appearance of the cosmetic tattoo. Allowing a minimum 2-week gap ensures that the effects of Botox or Dysport have settled, providing a stable canvas for the tattoo and ensuring more accurate and lasting results.

6. Allow at least one month between a permanent makeup procedure and any skin treatments, including but not limited to micro-needling (skin needling), skin peels, skin tightening, laser rejuvenation treatments, and IPL (intense pulsed light).

7. Keep your skin moisturised before the procedure. This will help to achieve good colour retention after the healing.

8. It’s important to avoid using products with active ingredients like AHA, BHA, vitamin C serums, retinoids, topical vitamin A, or hydroquinone on the area to be tattooed for at least 3 days, ideally a week, before the procedure. These ingredients can increase skin sensitivity and irritation, potentially leading to adverse reactions like redness, swelling, or discomfort.

9. During the treatment, numbing gel can be applied to minimise discomfort.  Australian law prohibits us from supplying it due to its classification as a prescribed medication. We recommend purchasing a specific numbing gel from a compounding pharmacy, as this gel is highly effective and contains lidocaine, tetracaine, and epinephrine. Please contact us directly to obtain the pharmacy contact details along with the numbing gel recipe. Otherwise, a cooling gel will be provided during the procedure for your comfort.

10. If you wear makeup on the day of the procedure, we recommend bringing your cosmetics (including foundation) to refresh your makeup afterward, as we will cleanse the skin to remove the tattoo pigment.

For lip blush tattoo:

1. To prevent cold sores during your lip tattoo session, it’s recommended to take antiviral medications such as Famvir, Famciclovir, Valcovir, or other over-the-counter options available at the pharmacy. Take the first tablet the day before the tattoo, the second on the day of the tattoo, and the third the day after. This treatment plan is suggested even if you’ve never had a cold sore before, as the virus can still be present in your body in a dormant state. If you’re particularly susceptible to cold sores, consider a longer course of medication as prescribed by your doctor.

2. Avoid getting Botox, Dysport, or fillers in the lip area within a month before or after the cosmetic tattoo. If you’re considering lip augmentation, we recommend getting lip blush first, followed by lip augmentation, and then a lip blushing touch-up. This will help to avoid the risk of tattooing over the lip skin border, which can result in a smudged lipstick effect after healing.

3. A week before the procedure, start moisturising your lips regularly. Additionally, it’s recommended to do a gentle exfoliation of your lips a few days prior to the procedure. This will remove dead skin cells and create a smooth surface for work, resulting in a more vibrant and long-lasting tattoo.

4. If you experience angular cheilitis or cracks at the corners of your lips, please seek medical treatment to address this before your appointment.

5. If you have desired colour in mind, please bring reference (in shape of lipstick, makeup pencil or a picture) to match it with the pigment mix.

6. Avoid using staining lip makeup before the procedure. It’s crucial to arrive with your natural lip colour to ensure the correct pigment mix for the desired result.

7. For your appointment arrive maintaining hygiene (tooth brushing or mouth wash is recommended) as a sign of respect to the PMU artist. The specialist reserves the right to cancel the appointment if the client lacks proper hygiene.

For eyeliner tattoo:

1.On the day of the procedure, please remove your contact lenses and avoid wearing mascara.

2.  Please remove lash extensions prior to the procedure. Not following this rule may result in additional costs due to the use of extra products and additional time consumed during the process.

3. You may want to bring sunglasses to wear after the procedure, as eyelids typically experience moderate swelling. The swelling can last up to 48 hours.

4. Discontinue the use of eyelash serum for 2 weeks before the procedure and avoid using it for 4 weeks afterward, as it can cause eyelid inflammation or swelling that may interfere with the treatment.

For eyebrow tattoo:

1. Do not tint and/or shape your eyebrows at least for 2 weeks before the procedure (ideally a month). It is important to see a natural hair growth to achieve the best shape and colour of the tattoo.

2. Gently exfoliate your face, including the brow area, 2-3 days before the procedure.

3. If you have a style or colour reference, such as a brow pencil or a picture, please bring it along. You can also pre-draw your eyebrows to show how you’d like them to look after they heal. We will ensure to offer the most suitable option for you and create symmetry.

4. We recommend washing your hair before your appointment, as it’s advisable to avoid wetting your eyebrows for 24 hours after the procedure.

After Care

General aspects related to all types of tattoo (read this first and follow to your specific type of tattoo):

1. From now onward, the healing process begins, including the formation of crusts on the skin surface, as well as an intradermal healing process that takes longer. The exact healing time varies from person to person, depending on factors such as metabolism, lifestyle, and the procedure itself. The colour of the tattoo will change during the healing period, so it’s important to be patient. On average, the tattoo takes 6 to 7 weeks to heal. After this time, you can decide if the tattoo needs any corrections, such as adjustments to the colour shade, colour intensity, or shape, or to cover minor imperfections. If needed, you can request a touch-up session within 2 months of the procedure.

2. Do not remove the crusts from the tattooed area while it heals. Prematurely picking at the crusts can lead to poor colour retention and even scarring.

3. It’s essential to avoid applying any cosmetic or pharmaceutical products containing active ingredients to the tattooed area, especially during the first month. The use of skin resurfacing products on the tattoo can cause premature fading. Additionally, applying these products may alter the tattoo’s colour due to changes in the skin’s pH environment.

4. It is recommended to minimise or ideally exclude drinking alcohol for a week from the procedure. It reduces protective functions of the body, immunity, which can lead to the formation of an inflammatory process.

5. Avoid unprotected sun exposure. UV light destroys pigment and shortens the lifespan of cosmetic tattoos, as well as altering their colour and brightness. Avoiding direct UV exposure to the tattoo while it’s healing is a must.

6. Refrain from strenuous exercise (and sweating) during the healing period, until the crusts of the tattoo have completely peeled off.

7. Avoid prolonged contacts of your tattoo with water, including taking long showers, baths, or swimming in reservoirs or the ocean, until the crusts of the tattoo have completely peeled off. After the crusts come off completely, you can maintain your normal lifestyle.

For lip blush tattoo:

  1. Immediately after the procedure, the skin may appear sensitive, slightly red, and sometimes moderately swollen. It’s common to feel a mild tingling sensation within 2 to 5 hours after getting a lip tattoo. This is normal and should not cause alarm. If swelling occurs, you may take an antihistamine immediately after the procedure or within the next 48 hours if needed.
  2. Avoid touching the treated area with your hands for the first 12 hours after the procedure. If you feel an itch, use a clean cotton swab to gently scratch the area instead.
  3. Typically, the active healing process takes about 4-5 days. From now and until the crusts peel off, keep applying the healing balm that will be given to you. You can apply it as many times as you need to keep your lips moisturised. If you run out of the balm, you can apply Bepanthen cream (Nappy Rash variation or Tattoo).
  4. From the moment the crusts peel off, you can start using your normal lip care product. We recommend using lip balm with beeswax, shea butter, or other healing properties as these ingredients will help to hydrate and protect your lips onward.
  5. Cold Sores: If you followed the preparatory instructions, you should have one more cold sore pill to take the day after the procedure. However, sometimes the virus can persist and still cause cold sores to appear on the lip surface. In this case, you should follow the general treatment for cold sores, which includes extending your course of antiviral medication and applying cream. It’s likely that after the cold sore heals, the pigment on that spot will fade more than on the rest of your lips. We recommend scheduling a touch-up session to correct the affected area.
  6. After 4 to 8 weeks from the procedure, if you feel that the colour has faded significantly and you would like to adjust the shade or intensify the colour, you can book a touch-up session. This session is not mandatory but advisable, as it helps to prolong the lifespan of the tattoo and correct any imperfections. Since the skin is a living organ, it tends to naturally expel ink over time. Therefore, annual touch-ups are recommended to refresh the colour and extend the lifespan of the lip tattoo.
  7. If your lips naturally have pigmentation, such as darker areas in certain spots or all over, there is a rare possibility that they may appear darker after a lip blush procedure. This condition is known as hyperpigmentation and can be triggered by any skin trauma, including lip blush, UV exposure, temperature changes, hot food or drinks, and more. Typically,  the darkened pigment fades over a few months and the skin gradually shows the lip blush colour.

For eyeliner tattoo:

  1. Usually, the active healing process takes about 5 to 7 days. During this period, you will experience crust formation and peeling. Typically, the day after the procedure, the eyelids may appear more swollen than immediately after the tattooing. You can apply a dry cold compress for a short periods and take antihistamines. By the end of the 48-hour period, the swelling should subside.
  2. Starting the day after the procedure and continuing until the crusts peel off, apply the healing balm provided to you 2 to 3 times a day in a thin layer over the tattoo. Do not use other creams, cosmetic products, or make-up on the eyelids until the crusts have completely peeled off. Once the crusts are gone, you can resume using your regular eye cosmetic products.
  3. If you use eyelash serum, you can resume using it after the complete healing process (~6 weeks). However, if you would like to achieve a brighter outcome and prolong the tattoo’s lifespan, it is recommended to schedule a touch-up session within 2 months of the procedure. You will need to discontinue using the lash serum 2 weeks before the touch-up session as well.

For eyebrow tattoo:

  1. Typically, the active healing process takes about 7 to 9 days. During this period, you will experience crust formation and peeling. After the crusts will peel, give the brow tattoo around 4-5 weeks to fully develop the colour.
  2. Refer you type of skin to follow instruction:
  • for dry and normal skin type – apply a thin layer of the healing balm giving to you 2-3 times a day from the next day after the procedure and until the crusts peel off.
  • oily and combination skin – do not apply any balm,  cream or oil to your tattoo as the skin may overproduce sebum that can lead to the risk of loosing the pigment before it settles. Keep your skin as dry as possible.

4. After approximately 6 weeks from the procedure, you can gently exfoliate your eyebrows to remove dead skin from the surface. This will provide a clearer view of the colour and help determine if you need a touch-up session, which should be scheduled within 2 months of the procedure if required.

5. Since the skin is a living organ, it tends to naturally expel ink over time. Therefore, annual touch-ups are recommended to refresh the colour and extend the lifespan of the lip tattoo.
